ABOUT ME

Stories matter.
I’ve known that since I was seven, writing about a family that adopted a stray cat (spoiler – it turned out to be a lion cub). I knew it a decade later, taking Creative Writing classes at university. I even knew it for a short time after I graduated, when I’d spend spare evenings scribbling away, sending comedy scripts off to the BBC (another story) or writing snatches of what would surely be the greatest novel ever written.

By the time my children were in school,  I was thinking about writing again. If I was going to write, it had to be now. It’s easy to underestimate the impact of professional input and accountability. Had I just decided to simply “write more” all those years ago, I doubt I would have moved forward with my ambitions. A friend referred me to a writing mentor, who quickly proved to be the motivation I needed. I began writing weekly, then twice a week, then four times a week, until my hobby became a habit. Before I knew it, I had gone from having a few vague ideas and scraps of stories to having written over 200 short stories and working on my first children’s novel.

As my confidence in my abilities grew, I found I was able to recognise constructive criticism for the gift it is. I learned to appreciate feedback and use it to improve my work. I immersed myself further into the literary world by taking on a volunteer Network Organiser role for the Welsh branch of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), eventually becoming their Network Organiser for Wales, and found interacting with new and established authors alike.

Last year, I was one of just 15 people selected to attend a residential course hosted by Mark Gatiss in January; I created and ran a course on Flash Fiction and was invited to write a blog post for the Scattered Authors webpage. I am gradually being recognised as someone who has a lot of knowledge about storytelling and is able to spin a good yarn. I’ve also discovered how much I enjoy helping new writers find their confidence and hone their skills.

Hazel Hitchins is the author of The Missed Appointment under the pen name of Siwan Freeman. She also has a number of children’s works for which she is seeking traditional representation.

She has a keen eye for detail and language use while also grasping the big picture of plotting, characterisation, theme and pace.
